McGregor made an impressive start to the bout and won the first four rounds. But even at 40-years of age, Mayweather showed that his stamina hasn’t wavered. By round six, McGregor had slowed significantly, whereas Mayweather only got faster with his hands and feet.
McGregor was lucky to escape having points taken away from him throughout the fight. On several occasions, McGregor hit Mayweather on the back of the head and below the belt.
“Tonight Was My Last Fight”: Floyd Mayweather
After the fight, Mayweather confirmed that his victory was likely going to be the last time he stepped into the ring. Showing respect for his opponent both before and after the fight, Mayweather praised McGregor’s performance during his debut professional boxing fight.
“He’s a lot better than I thought he was, but our game plan was to take our time and let him shoot heavy shots early”.
“I guaranteed everybody that this fight wouldn’t go the distance, I promised to go straight ahead, not back up, and I just look forward to going down in the hall of fame one day”.

Mayweather, who hasn’t stepped into the ring since 2015, is perhaps the biggest name in boxing. An astonishing 49-0 record, and all the money that’s come with it over the years, there was more than just embarrassment to fear for Mayweather if he lost to McGregor.
Despite the massive worldwide interest and incredible hype, McGregor came into the fight with nothing to lose. Everything about McGregor’s attitude during the promotion suggested that the Irishman wasn’t intimated by the occasion. McGregor’s amazing UFC career has been about defying the odds, and beating fighters that all the experts said he couldn’t.
Unfortunately for McGregor, beating Mayweather proved to be a bridge to far. For now at least.
