Hamilton Marist has created history by becoming Waikato club rugby champions for the third successive season.
In just their second grand final appearance, University fought to the end but just couldn’t get across the line, going down 10-8 in front of over 3,000 at Marist Park.
University toiled away at Marist all game long, and despite a late try, Jason Robertson just didn’t have enough power behind his kick to level the scores.
Marist held on to win the Waikato Breweries Shield, successfully defending their title, and becoming Hamilton club rugby’s unquestionable power house.
In cold and wet conditions, handling errors were to be expected as both teams tried to make the best of it with running ball.
Both Marist and University utilised the kicking game, but it was Marist prop Loni Uhila who powered over the try line after a long build up and rolling maul to give Marist a converted try’s advantage at halftime.
Trailing by just two points, University couldn’t get any structure in the backline to mount a challenge from inside their own half.
Marist are champions for another year.
