Chiefs lose in second concerning performance

The Chiefs stumbled to their second loss of the season in a wet and scrappy affair that was marred by foul play and missed opportunities.

Three red cards were handed out in the match, including two to the Sharks for what could best be described as highly cynical play.

The Sharks first red card came when Bismarck du Plessis kicked Michael Leitch in the head, and moments later Frans Steyn was sent from the field for tipping Aaron Cruden in a tackle and driving his neck into the ground.

Chiefs hooker Hika Elliot was red carded for shoulder charging Sharks prop Tendai Mtawarira.

Despite the Chiefs being a man down themselves, the extra player in the backline should have seen the Sharks pushed far closer on defense than they ever were in the match.

Damian McKenzie was blockbuster at fullback, breaking the line twice and igniting the attack.

Handling errors at costly moments cost the Chiefs, but the rain didn’t help.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said that the loss was disappointing but didn’t fault the performance of the referee.

The Chiefs notch their second loss of the season and will travel back home to play the Cheetahs in Hamilton on Saturday.
