Knights hold out Firebirds to begin Georgie Pie campaign

The Northern Knights have opened the Georgie Pie Super Smash with a win against the Wellington Firebirds that was comfortable in the end.

Getting first use with the bat, it was a mundane performance at best for the Knights.

Aussie import Travis Birt and young allrounder Scott Kuggeleijn the top scorers. Birt fell just shy of a half century.

Apart from a decent opening cameo by captain Daniel Flynn, none of the Knights batters would be very satisfied with their opening hit out in the Georgie Pie Super Smash.

The Firebirds bowled very well on what looked like perfect weather conditions for batting.

Though at times it was difficult to tell if it was good bowling by the Firebirds, or just batting that wasn’t up to scratch by the Knights.

Ben Laughlin made an immediate impact with the ball on his return to the Knights, snapping two wickets, including getting the wicket of Michael Papps from his very first delivery.

But the big talking point from the bowling performance will be that of Anton Devcich, the spin bowler taking a 4 wicket haul late in the game, stopping the Firebirds from coming close to their target of 158.

Opinion from this result will vary.

But again today at Seddon Park, it was the side batting second which fell short of its target after looking like a certainty early in the run chase.
